My First Web Site – Kompozer

Getting Started

1. Save this file to a specific folder (My First Web Page) where EVERYTHING for your site will be saved. Give the page a title: index.  (File --> Save As --> “index”. Navigate to folder for this site.)
2. From the Menu Bar, select Format --> Page Colors and Backgrounds.
3. Select Single Color Background Color.

Keep in mind:

• Contrast – what color text will show up on this background?
• Visual Appeal – is this a color people can stand to look at?
• Link Properties – change if necessary to work with background
• Unvisited Links should show up the best
• People are used to seeing unvisited links in royal blue (and underlined), so it’s best to keep them that way if possible

Adding a Title or Heading

1. Click inside your document.  Type the words ‘My First Web Page’.
2. Highlight your text, and use the tools in the text toolbar above.  This toolbar is set up similar to Word, Power Point, etc., so you should be familiar with the options.

Adding a Block of Text

1. Press enter once or twice.  Type an introduction or a short paragraph about yourself.
2. When you are done, highlight the text and change the size, and color if you wish.

Adding an Image

1. Click the Image button in the top toolbar.
2. Browse your folders and files for the image that you’d like to use.
3. Check “Don’t Use Alternate Text”, and then click OK.
4. Resize or move the image as needed. You may use the same alignment tools that you use to align text to align your image, to the left, right, or center of your page.

Adding a Link

1. Move down your page a little bit more, and add the subtitle ‘My Favorite Links’.
2. Type the name of one of your favorite web site. Highlight the text.
3. Click the Link button in the toolbar.
4. Type the exact address of the website you are trying to link your page to (include http://).  Press OK.

Previewing Your Site

1. In the top toolbar, click the Browse button.  Your webpage should open in an internet browser.
2. Ask yourself these questions:
   • How do your colors look?
   • Is your font easy to read?
   • Is anything too big? Too small?
   • Do you need to move anything, or space it out more?
3. Pay attention to your links:
   • Do they show up on the background?
   • Click on your link. If you typed the address perfectly, it should bring you to the site you listed.
   • Click the back button to go back to your page.  What color is your link now?  It should be the color that you chose at the beginning for your “visited links”

Return to KompoZer to make any necessary changes.

Continue on your own: Add at least 4 more websites/links to your list of favorite websites. Remember that for each site, you will have to use the Link Properties box to add the correct address. Add another block of text. This paragraph can be about your favorite music, the sports you play, your family, your pet, what you want to be when you grow up – whatever! Add another image.
